Q) If we want to send a box of gear, where can we send it to? 

A) The Turas Headquarters, Dunloe Golf Course, Beaufort, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland.

Q) Will food be provided at transitions?
A) There may be some transitions where food is available to purchase (or possibly even free!) but you should not plan for this. Assume no food available at transitions.

Q) Can I use a waterproof jacket on paddling sections instead of a cagoule?
A) Yes, we will accept a waterproof jacket.

Q) Can you tell me more about the bike boxes required for The Turas?
A) Bikes will be moved after each bike stage by The Turas to the next location where they will be required. Bikes must be disassembled after each stage by the competitors and put in a bike box or well padded bike bag. Maximum box dimensions: 70” x 40” x 16” / 178cm x 102cm x 40cm.

Q) Can we use flippers for swimming?
A) Flippers ARE allowed for swimming, sorry for any confusion.

Q) Can we use floatation boards for swimming?
A) Yes, as long as they fit in your box for watersports.

Q) Will we be carrying our packpacks while swimming?
A) Yes, you will carry all compulsory equipment while swimming. PFD at discretion of race officials.

Q) Is the IPX7 rating for headtorches required?
A) This rating is not required but is recommended. IPX7 means waterproof when submersed in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes. Headtorches will be used in watersports sections so will need to be waterproof.

Q) Is this a nonstop race, a stage race, or other?
A) Its non-stop primarily (approx 80 – 90 hours), with a long prologue (8 hours)/ stage 1. (These timings may change)

Q) Estimate on how many miles or kilometers will be traveled?
A) 500km, approx 50% MTB, 20% hiking and 25% paddling-

A) Refunds, you will not get your €300 downpayment if you cancel but you will receive 50% of the remaining (paid) entry fee if you decide to cancel before the 1st of June

Q) How many nights before and after we will have accomodation?
A) You will have 3 nights accomodation paid for. The 2 nights before the race and the night you finish the race.

Q) And when do you suggest we get to the race?
A) We suggest you get to Dingle, Co. Kerry. On Saturday 14th of June. If you would like to spend more than 3 nights in accommodation either before or after the race you will have to pay for those extra nights.

Q) What day is check in?
A) All teams must be present for registration on Saturday 14th June.

Q) What is the nearest airport to the race?
A) Kerry Airport.

Q) What is archaeo-navigation?
A) The archaeological-navigation just means the control points will all be placed on ancient archaeological sites. There are lots of them in this part of the world!

Q) Is there an entry fee, how much?
A) The entry fee is €4000 euro.

Q) Is transportation from the airport provided?
A) We will be picking up from Cork Airport, Shannon Airport and Kerry Airport on Saturday 14th of June. You can also get to Kerry terrestre by train www.irishrail.com a good option for teams with bikes and a lot of gear.

Q) Can we rent 4 Kit Boxes (i.e. Bins) sufficient enough for the race?
A) Teams must provide their own kit boxes or bags, clearly labelled with the team name.

Q) Can we use trash bags as bivvy’s?
A) We will not accept trash bags – must be clearly a Survival Bag (Plastic or Gore-Tex).

Q) Is a figure of 8 abseil device acceptable?
A) Figure 8 is perfect. We will not accept plate type belay devices for abseiling.

Q) How many helmets will we need?
A) You will need seperate helmets for ropes, bike and kayaking as all gear will only be available for relevant stages. If you have fewer helmets, you may have to carry a helmet on parts of the race where it is not required.

A) What kind of boats are available for the race?

Q) Who do we need to get in touch with about boats?
A) Please contact our boat rental partner Jim at info@atlanticseakayaking.com for further information on boats etc.

Q) We can’t fly with flares, where can we get some?
A) Glow sticks and flares, as well as all other equipment, available from our retail partners, Spórt Corrán Tuathail. Email info@sct.ie and see last newsletter for further information on the store. Order well in advance and they will deliver to the registration for you.

Q) What is a ‘buoyancy aid’?
A) Buoyancy aid is a PFD or life jacket. Must have constant buoyancy.

Q) What is a ‘kayak suit’?
A) Kayak suit equivalent to a cagoule. We will accept a waterproof jacket.

Q) How much will it cost to rent a kayak?
A) The cost is 250 euro .

Q) How much are the paddles?
A) 20 euro per pair

Q) How much are spray decks?
A) Nylon Spray decks: 20 euro each

Q) If we want to rent the all the equipment for kayaking how much will it cost?
A) Total Package: 310 for the race. This includes delivery and
collection for the race.

Q) How do we rent them?
A) Full payment by cc is required to guarantee kayak. Please contact our boat rental partner Jim at info@atlanticseakayaking.com for more info on boats.

Q) Can we use a short sleeve wetsuit
A) Wetsuit must be long sleeve.

Q) How big must the group shelter be?
A) Group shelter must fit all team members and must be min 3mX3m

Q) What does IPX7 rating mean?
A) IPX7 rating means waterproof if submerged in 1m of water for 30 mins. Equivalent specs accepted. See http://gpsinformation.net/iec529.htm This is a recommended waterproof rating for your headtorches.

Q) What is the Neky Amaruk like?
A) The Amaruk is a smaller, more compact tandem well suited to day paddling or
overnighters. It is ideal for those paddlers who are looking for a full
featured double kayak, but don’t want to deal with a large expedition boat.
The polymer version of our Amaruk has proven to be hugely popular with a
vast number of rental operations and schools. Its blend of
user-friendliness, stability and near indestructibility have earned it fans
everywhere.

Q) What are the specs for these boats?
A) Spec Construction: Polyethylene Length: 17’ 10” / 5.4 m Width: 28.5” / 72.4 cm Weight: 91 lbs / 41.3 kg

Q) Do you accept ATC’s?
A) We will not accept ATCs or other plate-type belay devices.

Q) Can we use a blizzard bag instead of a sleeping bag?
A) A blizzard bag is fine.

Q) Can we use duct tape as a repair kit for fibre-glass boats?
A) Duct tape is fine.

Q) Do you have any gear boxes to rent through the organization?
A) We will not have any gear boxes available. The local hardware stors should have what you need, or you can use duffle bags, as per the last kitlist.
